I was worried about getting sick and late-Monday night I thought I was getting something so on Tuesday and today I have given up on coffee.

I am so bloody tired, and it’s not due to the usual partying. The jury is still out on whether or not I’m sick.

"‘You have too many inputs, the TV, your phone, you have no way of digesting anything’...."

“
‘You have too many inputs, the TV, your phone, you have no way of digesting anything’.

‘Sure I do, it’s called sleeping’.

‘Try it sometime’.

‘Dad, I am not going to bed at 530pm’.
”

- Christmas dinner.

So, now that I'm in Toronto...

It’s a little weird to see Blue Jays gear everywhere.

As a Calgary ex-patriate, I can’t recall seeing this much Jays gear around. Hell, I’ve seen more Yankees caps in Cowtown than one Blue Jays - actual Jay birds excluded.

For a while, I was like, “what the hell”?

I just hope they have a better year than the Leafs (or the Flames for that matter) did, but from what I’m reading…not looking so good.

Manic Pixie Dream Girl

For three years, I worked at a movie theatre - seems like it was a decade ago nearly was actually (2004 onwards).

As we all know, everything in the movies comes true in real life and that being said, one type of person I haven’t found yet is the so-called Manic Pixie Dream Girl. If you don’t know what that means, it’s a term coined by AV Club writer and critic Nathan Rabin. Here’s his description (that I’ve stolen from Wikipedia).

“that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.”

Well, I haven’t found one yet and the ones I’ve met that come close to that description have their own issues - or, more importantly have already found a boyfriend.

Damn you Hollywood! Yet another thing from a movie that hasn’t come true for me. What else are you hiding?!

Gonna try this seriously now

I have a new goal, no matter what to write something every day.

I am convinced no one will ever read these posts, unless stumbling on here while in a mad search for free porn only to discover some word I typed has popped up in a search engine.

Rough

There we go.

The Trip to NYC

Last weekend I went on a weekend getaway to New York City. It was my first time in the Big Apple, it was a brief trip but all in all, I think I made the most of it.

That being said, the weekend I happened to go to NYC, there was a massive snowstorm that blanketed the northeast. NYC wasn’t impacted quite as bad but it was cold and rainy - as a Canadian it didn’t matter to me. I should note that it was pretty hard to get a cab that night in the upper east side. I managed to flag one down after 20 minutes but still…

Aside from that, I found a few neat spots to check out. First one was the 1986 EST. Wine Bar & Lounge at the Hotel Stanford - where I was staying. It’s a lounge on the second floor of the hotel, what was neat about it is that it has a casual atmosphere, felt very comfortable here, especially as a lone traveller. It really is a hole in the wall type of place, one that I will make sure to stop by again - I first found it as I was in my room upstairs and it was only Midnight and didn’t want to stay in and the cable went out. So I walked downstairs and voila, magic. Met some great folks there from the midwest and from Queens. The man from Queens gave me some great tips on places to hit up for a drink.

Next on my travels took me on a walk, mainly to the nearest Duane Reade to find an umbrella which then went missing later on in the night - more on that later. After that and mainly due to the snow, a quick walk for a pair of gloves took me to H&M. You’re probably thinking, oh god, what a great trip so far, a drug store and H&M. After this I made a journey through Times Square, fresh umbrella and all to find a cab and a visit to Club Macenudo - a cigar bar/restaurant primarily. One of the few places in Manhattan where you can get a meal and smoke a cigar at the same time. I only had a pint of Stella mind you, but if you are looking for and I truly mean this, if you are looking for that distinguished, rich, mahogany, leather-bound-books type of atmosphere, then this is it. I enjoyed a Dominican version of the Hoyo de Monterrey.

Later that night I found myself trekking down to TriBeCa to meet up with a contact - she is a close friend of a co-worker of mine that was aware of my NY trip. She put us in contact, she does ballet and it was her show. I missed most of the show due to my issues in trying to find a cab, we eventually met up and she brought along a friend. From here, we decided to look for a cool little place to hang out. We were going to go to Apotheke in Chinatown but upon our arrival there, we were told they were doing reservations only that night but they pointed us in the direction of this building next to them. Upon going down a flight of stairs filled with candles, we wound up in a Mexican restaurant/bar. This was the spot for the night. Good times were had by all, I won’t talk about the rest of it but somehow a rickshaw was involved. My umbrella went missing here. Ella, ella…

The next day, I went on a tour of CNN New York and made my merry way to New Jersey and the airport. Before I went to CNN, I got a slice of pizza from this little pizza shop where I met several other NY’ers and tourists. Once in a while you’ll find New Yorkers that are willing to help the less fortunate, a homeless man entered a big group of us all gave him something to eat, gave him some cash, I got him a drink and some onion rings.

For a first time trip to NYC with very limited time and a massive snowstorm, I must say it was a weekend I won’t soon forget.

Upon my traditional freeloading that I tend to do at Indigo - because who actually buys anything there or at Chapters anymore - I noticed a man at the lower level of the store proceeding to complain to the clerk.

This is nothing new to society, when we find something wrong at a merchant, it is in our rights to make known how we feel. As the closest thing to a representative of the merchant, the man in the black and blue vest fulfilled that duty quite well, the man, who’s name I’ll never know but we can refer to as “Yelly”, had some rather interesting statements and demands.

The man behind the counter offered the explaination that he doesn’t do purchasing, and “Yelly” said he knows that. Yelly said the manager of the store doesn’t do a very good job of purchasing for the location. He went on, at full blast, about his dissatisfaction with the manager.

Now, I believe the clerk said that the products may have been purchased and sold out but then Yelly said that said products would sell out in a heartbeat if they listened to him and purchased them. As I only heard part of the conversation, I’ll never know what they were arguing about. It could’ve been a book, perhaps some of the other little nick-nacks that they sell (I bought my first pen when I made the move out to Toronto at a Chapters).

The real kicker is that Yelly said he wants to speak to the CEO about this.

Riight. She runs a multi-billion dollar company, I’m sure she’ll pencil you in at 10:42 between more important things and a meeting.

Yelly then turned away from the clerk and the counter and promptly walked off. I did my best to avoid making eye contact and kept looking at a series of wall calendars. Hey, there’s a Walt Disney calendar available!

As it was a Saturday night, I’m sure that clerk wound up doing several shots because of him after he got off shift.
